The International Democrat Union (IDU) is a working association of over 80 Conservative, Christian Democrat and like-minded political parties of the centre and centre right.
IDU Member, the United National Party (UNP), have won Sri Lanka’s Parliamentary elections after former President Mahinda Rajapaksa conceded victory. This means that the incumbent Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, leader of UNP, will form the new government.
The UNP have won 11 of 22 districts, whilst Rajapaksa’s United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) won 8. Three districts are still to declare. As these are in Tamil areas, they will likely return ethnically based parties.
As expected, UNP will need the support of minority parties to secure a majority in 225 member parliament and form a government. PM Wickremesinghe confirmed that he was confident he would be able to do so, and “consolidate the January 8 revolution.”
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe is the leader of IDU’s Sri Lanka member, the United National Party (UNP), Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Democrat Union and an IDU Vice-Chairman.
Full results will be declared later today.
The IDU congratulates Prime Minister Wickremesinghe and UNP on this excellent election result!
